I’ve been reading a long PDF on my phone late at night and the bright white pages hurt my eyes. Dark mode doesn’t change the document itself. Is there a quick way to invert the colors?

Annoying one, especially on a phone at night. Try your phone’s accessibility colour inversion or a reader with a sepia/night theme, as that usually works without altering the PDF file. For a permanent copy, I would convert the pages to images and invert them, but text and file size can suffer.

Had the same thing last month with field drawings at night. Dark mode on the phone left the pages bright white. I switched to Adobe Acrobat Reader and turned on its night mode which inverts the PDF colors. Works well enough for me though the images look a bit odd.

On my iPhone I go to Settings, then Accessibility, Display and Text Size, and turn on Smart Invert. It darkens the pages nicely without messing up photos. Android phones have an Invert Colors switch in Accessibility too. Give that a try before bed, it saved my eyes.

If you are on your phone, the easiest trick is to use the built-in accessibility settings. iPhones have a Smart Invert feature that flips your screen colours, making those glaring white contracts much easier on the eyes. If that fails, you can permanently change the document background colour using [pdfcap.com](http://pdfcap.com) beforehand. What type of mobile device are you reading on?

@nicholasb23 Smart Invert is what I suggest to patrons at the library too, works a treat. One tip: add it to the Accessibility Shortcut so a triple click of the side button toggles it fast. I’d avoid Classic Invert though, it flips photos and signatures into wierd negatives. Learned that one the hard way helping someone scan a form back.

hmm i think adobe reader has a setting somewhere that flips the page colors, might be under view or accessibility. if you read through a browser like chrome there’s usually a built in dark mode for pdfs too. that’d be the easiest thing to try before messing with the file itself.
