I have to email a 12-page proposal that people can view but not edit, and a normal save still lets them change the text. Has anyone gotten a read only PDF to actually stick?

That is annoying, especially when it is for an assignment. Combining the files is easy, but for the editing bit I would export the final document as a PDF, then use the PDF’s permissions/security settings to restrict editing with a password. It will deter ordinary changes, though no PDF protection is completely foolproof.

Had the same thing last month with a field report. Printing the whole thing to a new PDF made it read only and people could not change the text after that. I’m not sure about every program but that’s what I try first. It kept my 12 pager looking the same too.

A normal save won’t do it because PDF editing permission is separate from saving. What I do now is set a permissions password before emailing, then keep an unlocked copy for myself. If that’s a hassle, I’d put it in a view-only cloud share and email that instead.

I send out estimates all the time and you definitely want to lock those down. I usually use PDFcap to flatten the document, which basically turns the text into an image so nobody can alter your numbers. You can also set a permissions password in there to restrict editing. What device are you using to make the proposal?

@noobPhantom07 That’s my go to trick too, printing to a fresh PDF flattens everything so nobody can edit the text. One tip: open the new file and skim every page before you send it, I had a page break jump once and learned that the hard way. Just avoid the draft or low quality print setting, it can make the text look fuzzy.

i’d try the “security” or “protect document” option in whatever program made the PDF, set editing to “none,” and add a password. reopen it in another viewer and try changing something to confirm. this mostly prevents accidental edits, not copying or replacing content. if you need stronger control, ask whether your school has a required upload or view-only link.

Flattening it helps, print to PDF again after merging so it’s basically an image of itself. Also keep your original file saved somewhere before you do that.
