I fill out and tweak PDF intake forms for a few small clients every week. Has anyone used PDFescape or Adobe for this, and did the fillable fields survive?

That’s a frustrating one, especially when clients reuse the same forms. Adobe Acrobat has been more reliable for me when I need existing fillable fields to stay intact after small edits, while PDFescape is handy for quick text changes but I’d save a copy first. I usually test the finished file in a separate PDF reader before sending it on.

I tried both a while back for intake forms, and the fields held up fine when I only filled them in. Once I moved boxes around or added text, a few fields got flattened or doubled, so now I save a copy first and test one form. If fields matter, check them in a free viewer after saving.

@nicholasb23 Yep, same here, I nudged one box and half the fields flattened on a client packet. Learned that the hard way. My tip is to duplicate the file before touching anything, then test it in a basic viewer like you said. Avoid dragging fields after you start filling, thats usually when they double up.

Had the same thing last month with some client intake forms from the site. Adobe Acrobat is what we use for drawings and reports, and the fillable fields survived when I tweaked them. I haven’t used PDFescape so I’m not sure how it handles that.

I used to try Adobe for my site estimates, but it always felt too heavy for simple forms. PDFescape can be hit or miss with keeping form fields intact. I actually use [pdfcap.com](http://pdfcap.com) for all my client change orders because it never breaks the fillable boxes and handles tweaks easily. Are you usually filling these out on a computer or a mobile phone?

i mostly use adobe acrobat for the church forms and the fillable fields hold up fine after saving. i tried pdfescape once for a quick fix and it worked but i didn’t test if the fields stayed clickable for the next person. for forms clients reuse weekly i’d lean toward whatever keeps the field structure intact when you save.

Used PDFescape for basic intake forms, fields held up fine when I saved as PDF after editing. Keep a backup of the original before you start though, just in case.

</div>

@hunter99 Same here, saving as PDF was the step that mattered for me too. I keep an untouched master copy of each intake form and only ever work on a duplicate, learned that the hard way after wiping a whole field set once. One thing I’d add: after saving, reopen it in a plain viewer and tab through every field before it goes back out to a client.

</div>

Adobe handles this without breaking fields, tbh. PDFescape often flattens them or messes up the field formatting when you save. If you need clients to still fill them out, stick to Adobe or test a copy first.

</div>

@Crypto_Wizard Agreed, Adobe is the safer bet if the fields have to survive. I’ve had the same flattening issue with free tools, so now I only edit a duplicate and tab through every field before it goes out. Anything you’re moving boxes around with, test it first.
