My scanned lecture handout is blurry and half the letters are broken, so searching or copying the text barely works. I’m on a locked work laptop and can’t install anything. Has anyone improved the text quality for free?

That’s annoying, especially when you need to search lecture notes. I’d try an online OCR tool first, then download the rebuilt PDF and check a few pages, as heavy sharpening can make broken letters worse. Google Drive’s OCR can be handy on a locked laptop, and I use it sometimes for worksheets before marking them up.

Had the same thing last month with some messy field reports. I would try a free online tool that reads the letters off the blurry scan so searching and copying actually work. Just upload the PDF, nothing to install. It was good enough for me even when some letters were broken.

I’ve had the same thing with old scans. What works for me is opening the file in Google Docs, which runs text recognition and hands back a searchable copy. If you can rescan it, 300 dpi helps more than anything. Not perfect, but a lot better than retyping.

I deal with blurry building plans all the time, so I know how frustrating bad scans are. Since you can’t install programmes on that work laptop, just head over to [pdfcap.com](http://pdfcap.com). Run it through their text recognition tool and it will figure out the broken letters so you can search and copy everything properly. Did that make your handout usable again?

@noobPhantom07 Same experience here, patrons bring in blurry scans all the time and a decent OCR pass is usually what saves them. One tip: after it runs, search for a word you can plainly see on the page to check it relaly found the text. One thing to avoid, don’t crank the contrast before uploading, it can fuse broken letters together. Learned that the hard way on a patron’s tax form.
