I need to complete a PDF application, but clicking the blank fields doesn’t let me type anything. Is there a way to fill it out on my laptop without printing it?

That is annoying, but you don’t need to print it. Open it in a PDF editor and use the Add Text or Fill & Sign tool to place text boxes over the blank lines, then save a new copy. I do this for marked homework quite often; Adobe Acrobat Reader and AltoSignPDF both handle it, even on my old laptop.

Had the same thing last month with a couple of field forms that looked fillable but weren’t. I used Adobe Acrobat Reader on my laptop and picked Fill and Sign so I could type text over the blanks. It works even if the PDF doesn’t have any clickable boxes built in. Saved me a trip to the printer.

I hit this all the time with notary forms. What works for me is opening the PDF in LibreOffice Draw, then using the text box tool to type over the blanks. Microsoft Word can do it too if you open the PDF and save it back out. Just check the layout after.

I run into flat PDFs all the time with supplier contracts. Since the programme doesn’t recognise the fields, the easiest way to fix it is using PDFcap. You just upload your document to [pdfcap.com](http://pdfcap.com) and use the text tool to click anywhere on the page and type. It saves printing and scanning everything. Are you using a Mac or a Windows laptop?

@nicholasb23 Seconding Word for this, it surprises people at the library every time. My tip: after you open the PDF in Word, save as PDF again right away so the layout locks in before you type. One thing to avoid, don’t try editing the orginal file directly, always work on a copy. Learned that the hard way with a patron’s W-4.

first, see if the organization has an editable or fillable version of the application. if not, open the PDF in chrome or edge and use the text tool to type over each blank. for checkboxes, use the drawing tool to add a mark. save a copy afterward so the original stays clean.
