I have a .bin file that I need to turn into a PDF, but I’m not sure what kind of file it contains. Is there a simple way to figure out whether it can be converted?

That is a bit annoying, as “.bin” just means binary data rather than a specific document type. I’d first make a copy, then try opening it with a text editor or checking its properties to look for clues such as PDF, ZIP, image, or firmware data. If it is actually a PDF or image with the wrong extension, renaming it may work; otherwise you will need the program or device that created it.

Had the same thing last month with a field dump. Bin files are just raw data so they may not convert depending on the contents. I would open it in a hex editor (a tool that shows the actual bytes) to see if it starts like a PDF. If nothing looks familiar I would check with whoever gave me the file.
