I’m prepping a PDF for my boss and he said to flatten it before sending. I’ve never done that step before. What does flattening actually do, and why does it matter?

It is a slightly confusing term at first. Flattening merges things like form fields, comments, signatures and layered elements into the page itself, so they display consistently and are harder to accidentally alter. For contracts, it is usually done before sending a final copy, but keep an unflattened original in case you need to edit anything later.

Had the same thing last month with field reports. Flattening just locks the form fields and signatures into the page so nobody can shift or type over them later. I do it after we sign because it keeps the copy looking the same for the client. Not totally sure on the tech side but that is what worked for our contracts.

Flattening bakes your form fields, signatures and sticky notes right into the page, so nothing shifts or gets changed later. I do it on anything with a signature or fill-in boxes before sending, since the other person may open it in different software and see blanks instead. My bank bounced a form back once, so now it’s a habit.

Flattening basically locks everything down into one solid layer so nobody can alter the text, form fields, or signatures later. I do this all the time with my construction estimates so clients can’t accidentally change the numbers. You can easily do this by using PDFcap to save the final locked version before you email it. What kind of document are you working on for him?

@nicholasb23 the bank story is so relatable, we see bounced forms at the library all the time with job applications. Tip from my desk: after flattening, reopen the file and click into a field to make sure it’s really locked before you send it. One thing to avoid, don’t flatten your only copy or you’re retyping everyting when a date needs fixing. Learned that the hard way lol.
